US and Russia began direct negotiations on the conflict in Syria. The defense ministers of the two countries had a telephone conversation on Friday андdiscussed the concerns, the White House had about the military support that Moscow gives to Damascus, reported the “Washington Post.”

Conversations are happening against the backdrop of reports of the appearance of the first Russian fighter at a military base on the Syrian coast.

During the 50-minute conversation, Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu informed his colleague Ashton Carter that Russia’s actions were “defensive in nature” and their goal is the fulfillment of the country’s commitments to the government of Bashar Assad.

The two ministers agreed to further discussions and also to plans about the creation of mechanisms by which the forces of the US and Russia not to interfere with each other and to avoid unintended incidents on the ground in Syria.

Meanwhile, US Secretary of State John Kerry said that talks with Russia will help in determining what a possible future steps to take to resolve the conflict in Syria.

Speaking to reporters in London, which he is visiting, he added that Washington’s focus remains on the destruction of the Islamic state, and the political solution to the conflict, which according to him can not be achieved with support of the Assad regime.

The Secretary of State added that Assad must go from power, but the timing of its withdrawal should be determined through negotiations.
